The chairman of Microsoft and for many years the world’s wealthiest man, Bill Gates is a very giving philanthropist. Mr. Gates is currently helping cure the world of fatal diseases as well as improving American education. Being a Harvard dropout, Gates revolutionized the personal computer. He not only helped create a new global industry but also made one of the most used software in the world, Windows. Gates’ goal of finding the ideal technology with the right application during his time with Microsoft can also be seen in his humanitarian efforts. More than a decade ago, Mr. Gates was driven by his conviction that if he were to place an incentive for pharmaceutical companies, they would develop cures for diseases that are widespread in third world countries. Having a business mindset, the “Gates have treated their charitable contributions like venture capital investments” (Councill, 2010). Famous for asking other billionaires to commit half their fortune to his charity, Gates also commit 95% of his own fortune to charity. Giving 95% of his own personal wealth shows an astounding amount of generosity. A donation on that scale changes substantially who you are. Recently Gates affirmed that “he’ll [n]ever go back to work full-time at Microsoft, the company he co-founded 36 years ago” (Newman, 2011). Over the years, his involvement in his charity work occupied more of his time and interest. In 2006, Mr. Gates decided to step down from his work at Microsoft to devote more quality time to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. His last full day of work at Microsoft was the 27th of June, 2008.

During the 1960s, two school boys have been making computer software as a hobby and selling it for a profit. As time progressed into the 1970’s, Bill Gates and Paul Allen develop their hobby into a hobby and the company Microsoft is established. Soon, Microsoft began to develop high-level computer technology, while introducing the world to a new perspective in computers. The 1970’s was the birth of modern computing and personal computers were rare. Through Microsoft, Gates proposed ideas that companies such as IBM accepted, integrating them into their computers. This step shifted the modern computing era of the 1970’s into an era of revolutionary computer programming. Mr. Gates is a very ambitious person. Being dismissed as merely “toys for hobbyists”, the potentials of the microprocessor was soon recognized by Gates and his partner Paul Allen. Gate’s mentality "to learn, make mistakes, try new things out, find new partners to do things" (Gates, 2012) fueled his drive to develop Microsoft into something greater. His mentality was proved to be correct as Microsoft created a joint-agreement with IBM and publicized its shares in 1986. The publication of its shares increased the revenue of the company to $4 billion. This evidently shows the ambition Gates had for his company. In a matter of twenty years, Microsoft had innovated multiple computer programs and devices that revolutionized the accessibility of computers. By the early 1990’s, Bill Gates and Paul Allen have never thought that their hobby would turn one of them into one of the wealthiest man in the world. After the creation of the Internet, the gravity of technology shifted away from PCs.
