Nelson Mandela

Even before Mandela had been involved in politics he was helping people with the injustice they faced. After higher education Mandela had worked at a law firm that supplied services to blacks in South Africa that could not afford lawyer representation. When the British lost power in the country and the nation elected a party pro-apartheid, Mandela became involved in politics.
As the party was elected, Mandela led the ANC Defiance campaign to fight for the anti-apartheid cause. His voice was then suppressed by the government and was placed in jail for treason, but Mandela did not stop. As he was released from prison, he resumed fighting for his cause. Mandela went into talks with the National Party trying to persuade them to make reforms in the anti-apartheid cause. He later became the president of South Africa and lead to the end of the apartheid.
After he left office, he spent the rest of his life trying to bring about a better world for all of mankind. “His commitment to changing the world for the better has lasted almost 7 decades, 67 years” (Adoptionnews, 2012). He has created many organizations that aim to fight the many problems that people face today. These actions he makes today is a testimony to what he has done his entire life—“ In a life dedicated to overcoming adversity and injustice, time and time again, Nelson Mandela has refused to quit as he relentlessly presses for social changes and shifts in political will. Nowhere are the themes of his life more applicable than in the fight against tuberculosis” (Action, 2012).

Deeply inflicted by segregation and suppression from White colonists, South Africans congregated under Nelson Mandela’s leadership to regain power. Born in the modest village of Qunu in 1918, Rolihlahla Mandela grew up attending tribal town meetings, molding him into a leader South Africa direly needed in order to end the Apartheid. After studying law at the University of South Africa, Mandela participated actively in the government under the ANC—African National Congress. Within the ANC, Mandela founded “Umkhonto we Sizwe” as a wing in the ANC. All throughout the 50s and 60s, Mandela worked to congregate leaders of African tribes and other parties. He was even arrested and imprisoned in 1962. Mandela finally gained enough support to bring democracy to South Africa in 1994 when he was elected to be the first Black president. As president, Mandela gradually worked to provide Blacks with the same rights, especially with land distribution, in which he tried to “help create stability by raising living standards” (Mseteka). His land redistribution program brought rights to Blacks and allowed them to reclaim their lands, providing them with new homes and the same equal opportunity as Whites. Additionally, Mandela worked to bring politically different groups together and form alliances with them. The social reforms Mandela enacted, including free healthcare, enabled South Africa to prosper and return to a nation of equality and opportunities. “Mandela possesses a common touch that no amount of political coaching can inculcate” (Stengel).
